Customizing permalinks or permanent links for wordpress blog is essential, because the better permanent links format, the better the performance will be. May be you need to read about this on Google Webmaster guidelines to know more about optimizing web pages to be a Google search friendly site.

We can access permalinks on the Wordpress Dashboard, Settings, Permalinks as in the screenshoot below:

The most recommended pemalinks is by choosing custom structure. It will be like /%category%/%postname%/ I heard this is good for better indexed by Google and in I think it’s a good structure, so why don’t we use it.

One thing that should be noted that changing permalinks for old blog that have already lot of posts in it will be a big problem. There will be broken links, and we’ll lose our visitors. To anticipate it, we’ll need a plug-in called Plug-in Migration wrote by Dean. You can download it here.

It is now safe to migrate our post links, but it’s not a problem for an empty blog, we can directly change the permalinks structure without installing the plug-in.
